Similarities Between Architecture & Dr. Strange?
#6 Advice for those looking to do something new like architecture school.

Yo, What's up! Joseph here
This last week consisted of a lot of retrospective thinking in regards to my time in architecture school and the āwhyā I still create content. Donāt worry! Itās not because Iām thinking of stopping but itās because Iām learning and growing and when we grow we adapt, similar to our favorite Ninja Turtles! š

This week's video is a new style of symposium brought to you by the MAD Collective https://mad-collective.org/
Stress within school is super relevant right now and has been these last few years. Skip around and listen to different parts of the video, it's a bit long but very interesting to listen to! What are your thoughts? Let me know down below in the comments!

I was on Reddit the other day browsing through the Architecture Student subreddit and I came across this question and it made me wonder somethingā¦
Have you seen the Marvel movie, Dr. Strange? It's with the guy (Benedict Cumberbatch) who was also in Sherlock the tv show and a WHOLE bunch of other movies. Well, I found myself watching Dr. Strange last night in the dark because I personally love that movie but it got me thinking. Do you remember the scene where he goes to Tibet to get "healed" and meets The Ancient One? He gets his world rocked because his huge ego is used to seeing a man in charge but then realizes that it's this badass bald chick who he needs to talk to. WELL without telling you the whole story, The Ancient One says āš½
I know how to reorient the spirit to heal the body
and because Dr. Strange is a man of science, he has a closed mind when it comes to.. you know, the spiritual stuff. š
I know I know I'm getting there! The Ancient One then proceeds to punch Dr. Strange into an astral projection in an attempt to OPEN HIS MIND! and to our surprise, it works!
Many students come into architecture school wanting to know everything about architecture before even learning it. I once had a high school student message me and ask very detailed questions about what rendering programs he should be using and what the schools I went to required. I was curious so I went to his website and as a high school student he already had a portfolio larger than most second-year arch students with architecture-related work! In this case, I felt like his ego put him at a level where if he already knew everything then school would be easy and he could breeze on by like no big deal. What he didnāt know was that this would be the thing to give him the hard timeā¦
I'm here to say as someone who had a bit of an ego going into grad school that these professors want you to be a blank slate. The point of going to a design school is to be molded into great young designers. Go in with an open mind and relearn things you might already know how to do. 9 times out of 10 you'll learn something new or become more efficient in doing so! Succumb to being taught things differently because knowledge isn't a linear path, you've got to fail sometimes to really learn something!
So with this, I leave you; If you really want to know what to expect in architecture school and be prepared, do some research, read some books, download these programs if you so desire, and play around with them. The best learning is done when you're under pressure and it has to be done tomorrow. Keep your mind open and resist the urge to become a master the first day of architecture school, skills will come and you'll only become a great designer after you put in your 10,000 hours of practice.
Resource of the Week š
Dimensions.com
Dimensions.com is a comprehensive reference database of dimensioned drawings documenting the standard measurements and sizes of the everyday objects and spaces that make up our world.
Personally, I think this is a great tool when you're just starting out and need to know quick dimensions of things!
