Typical Architect vs You and your math skills...
#8 This issue is all about the assumptions that come with becoming an architect.

It’s an even better week now because it means there’s a new issue of Life of a Designer out!🎉 I also just want to say I appreciate each and every one of you who have subscribed, (even you mom..) This week a fellow architecture creator went viral with her comparison post! Joann Lui helps architects build an unforgettable personal brand so that you can grow your career and make your voice heard. She used her voice and her platform to leverage the differences between a typical architect vs how she portrays herself as an architect. Although I do like to wear black and love the simplicity of black and white spaces…It’s important to see the other side of architects who don’t fit the old white male mold that is often portrayed. 😑
If you’re interested in growing your personal brand or are a Woman in Architecture, definitely give Joann a follow! She gives out so much great information daily and she’s definitely someone to look up to.
Article of the Week 📚
On Architects Being “Good at Math”
There were two things I was told while I was growing up every time I said I wanted to become an architect. Those two things are 1. Damn Joseph, you're going to be rich! and 2. Damn Joseph, you must be really good at math huh!
Yeah.. we'll I'm here to say I'm not rich and probably won't ever be! haha and I was okay at math. Pretty average but sometimes with a calculator, pretty advanced 😎Have you been asked this? Now to say "you don't have to be good at math to be an architect" is probably a lie. You've got to know geometry, especially if you're trying to be the next Frank Gehry! But you also have to know how to calculate the area of a room, do basic algebra for calculations, and REALLY know your fractions. There is actually a lot of math involved but not overwhelmingly so.
I would guess that the hands-on middle management type architects at small and mid-sized firms maybe use the most math as they have to deal with all aspects of project delivery and coordination.
If you were average in school and got by in math class then you should be good, and I think the author agrees. To be "good" is a relative term, you just have to know how to do it and the longer you're practicing in the profession the easier it'll be.. especially because there are programs that calculate the majority of it for you.
Resource of the Week 🔗
Snazzy Maps
This week's resource is SnazzyMaps.com Although I don't recommend using it on your presentation boards as a main graphic, these maps are really helpful in a pinch. I've actually found myself using this site more now while working than I did in school. Right now we use the custom color features to flow with our branding and to quickly show a client the site and location of projects. As for using it in school, I think for small diagrams and as an underlay, it would be perfect.
Create your own custom color combo or use one of their supplied schemes and share it with me! I'd like to see how you're using this resource.
Freebie of the Week 🤑👀
I’ll release a few free graphic assets from my personal library every week and sometimes more! I hope you downloaded the files from last week because they are now gone! DUN DUN DUN!!! Not to worry though, I plan on bringing them back soon. Subscribe to this newsletter and I’ll let you know when you can download all of the assets!
That's all for this week, follow me on Twitter & Instagram 📲
I'll be back next week, same time, same place! 💪🏽
